Understanding the Different Grades of Silk

Silk is often spoken about as a single material, but not all silk is created equal. The way silk feels, wears, and lasts depends largely on how it is graded and woven. Understanding these differences makes it easier to choose silk that truly supports comfort, longevity, and everyday rituals.

What does silk grade actually mean?

Silk grade refers to the quality of the silk fibers themselves. This is influenced by factors such as fiber length, consistency, smoothness, and overall appearance. Higher grade silk is made from longer, more uniform fibers, which results in a smoother texture, a softer feel against the skin, and a more refined finish.

While grading systems can vary slightly by manufacturer, silk is commonly grouped into quality levels, with Grade A representing the highest standard. Lower grades may look similar at first glance, but tend to have shorter fibers, less consistency, and a shorter lifespan over time.

What is 6A Grade silk?

When silk is described as 6A Grade, it refers to the highest classification of mulberry silk available. This silk is produced using the longest and most uniform fibers, giving it exceptional smoothness, durability, and a naturally even sheen.

This level of quality is particularly important for items that come into close contact with your skin and hair, such as pillowcases, where friction and fabric breakdown can affect comfort over time.

Understanding momme weight

Momme weight, often written as “mm,” measures the density and weight of silk fabric. In simple terms, it indicates how thick and durable the silk is.

Lightweight silks, typically between 8 and 19 momme, are often used for garments or decorative pieces. Silk used for bedding generally falls between 19 and 30 momme, offering a balance between softness and strength. A 22 momme silk pillowcase, for example, feels luxurious while remaining suitable for nightly use.

Why grade and momme matter together

Silk grade and momme weight work together. A higher momme silk made from lower grade fibers may feel heavy but lack refinement, while high grade silk at the right momme weight delivers both softness and longevity. This combination is what gives quality silk its signature feel and performance.

At Sukoon Rituals, our pillowcases are crafted from 6A Grade, 22 Momme, 100% Mulberry Silk, chosen to support gentler sleep, smoother hair, and calmer skin over time.

How to tell real silk from imitation

With so many silk alternatives on the market, knowing how to identify genuine silk is just as important as understanding grades. From touch and texture to how fabric reacts to light and movement, there are simple, reliable ways to tell the difference.
